I have smoked daily for about 3 years. Lately I wake up nauseous almost every morning. My partner suggested CHS but I assumed that only happened to extremely heavy users. How long does it typically take for this to develop?

Morning nausea is one of the early warning signs — what doctors call the prodromal phase of CHS. It can take 1 to 5 years of heavy daily use before a full episode hits. The fact that you are noticing it matters a lot.

I was a daily smoker for 2 years before my first major episode. Started with morning nausea for months, then one day I could not stop vomiting for over 6 hours. Please take the early signs seriously.

Everyone is different — some develop CHS after 1 year, others after 10. Genetics may play a role. But the morning nausea pattern specifically is worth mentioning to a doctor soon.
