I keep seeing people argue CHS is caused by pesticides on commercial cannabis, not cannabis itself. The theory is it did not exist before large commercial grows. Is there science behind this?
The pesticide theory is appealing but not well supported by current evidence. CHS has been documented in people growing their own cannabis organically with zero pesticide exposure. THC itself can cause CB1 receptor dysregulation with prolonged heavy dosing.
Some compounds like azadirachtin have GI effects and there were contamination concerns in certain legal markets. But those would produce different symptoms and would not explain the hot-shower relief pattern so specific to CHS.
I grew my own for four years with completely clean inputs and still developed CHS. I wish it was pesticides because that would mean I could return to using clean product. But stopping cannabis resolved my symptoms regardless.
