ER doctors are reporting a significant increase in young patients with severe cyclic vomiting linked to cannabis. Some call it an emerging epidemic. What is driving this and what can be done about it?
We see it constantly at our hospital. At least one suspected CHS case every couple of days. Higher-potency products — especially concentrates — seem to accelerate how quickly CHS develops in susceptible individuals.
Legalization increased access and reduced stigma around heavy daily use. More people using more cannabis, combined with dramatically higher THC concentrations, creates the conditions for CHS to become much more common.
A huge part of the problem is lack of awareness. Most dispensaries do not mention CHS at all. Cannabis is marketed as universally safe, so people do not connect symptoms to habits until they have had multiple severe episodes.
